ACS: Understanding the Fundamentals of Oxygen
Overview
Designed for clinical staff: non-paediatric nursing, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, occupational Therapists, Physician Associates, Apprentice AHP’s, Advanced Practice Practitioners, medical Practitioners
PRE-COURSE WORK MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE ATTENDING THE COURSE
The course is broken into two components; the first component includes an e-learning package that must be completed prior to attending the practical half day session. The e-learning package will include resources on responsibilities of healthcare workers when delivering oxygen, oxygen escalation scales, precautions, oxygen device information, pathophysiology of hypoxia, and relevant articles.
The practical session of this course is conducted in the medical simulation centres and will enable staff to practice and increase their confidence in using different oxygen devices including HFOT. Participants will receive advanced HFOT train the trainer teaching that will equipped them to teach other members of staff within their speciality areas. The course will be concluded by discussing common oxygen scenarios and interventions.

- Differentiate the responsibilities of oxygen delivery between healthcare professionals
- Identify criteria for implementing the oxygen scales
- Describe what precautions are associated with oxygen therapy
- Select appropriate oxygen device for clinical need
- Summarise management of hypoxia
- Explain the procedure for set-up of different oxygen devices (including HFOT)
- Recognise correct flow meters and outlets
- Appraise underpinning policy and practice which ensures safe management of oxygen delivery
