ACS: Tracheostomy Champions Training
Overview
Designed for clinical staff working within adult Tracheostomy patients: non-paediatric nursing, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, Physician Associates, Advanced Practice Practitioners.
The course is conducted in the medical simulation centres for staff on designated ward areas that care for patients with tracheostomies on a regular basis. Candidates will build confidence in becoming a colleague mentor and contributing to developing Tracheostomy competencies in other staff. This will involve discussions regarding the current Tracheostomy competency framework, methods of enabling competency and task practice, delivering formal tracheostomy teaching and utilisation of Teaching resources. Tracheostomy Champions will become proficient mentors and promote future Tracheostomy training within their specific clinical areas.
PRE-COURSE WORK MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE ATTENDING THE COURSE

- Provide evidence of attending Foundation Tracheostomy course in last 3-5 years
- Provides evidence of completed Tracheostomy competencies
- Understand the physiological effects of tracheostomy insertion and impact on respiratory mechanics
- Understand the differences between Tracheostomy and Laryngectomy
- Interpret the current Resus guidelines / Emergency algorithm for Tracheostomy patients
- Discuss the impact of tracheostomy on speech and swallow
- Identify and clinically reason the recommendations for tracheostomy weaning
- Understand the actions required to demonstrate competency in tracheostomy changes
- Interpret the current Tracheostomy competency framework with reference to becoming a proficient mentor
- Discuss how to promote future Tracheostomy training and mentorship
- Receive feedback on a Tracheostomy Teaching session
- Deliver, with support from faculty, a component of the Trusts Foundation Tracheostomy Training.

Applications should include a copy of the foundation course certificate and a copy of the signed Competency Framework . If these documents cannot be produced application will be rejected.
All pre course work must be completed prior to attending the course

A 10 minute presentation is required from each participant on a pre-assigned Tracheostomy topic
