ACS: Acute Care Training in Simulation
Course overview
This course is conducted in the medical simulation centre and will enable staff to practice their acute care skills in a simulated ward environment. Participants will receive feedback from observers, other team members and video cameras, to assist improvement of knowledge and skills alongside an exploration of human factors such as communication, leadership and situational awareness. Commonly occurring deterioration scenarios are addressed.

Non-paediatric nursing staff with a minimum of nine months’ ward experience post qualification. Please complete REACT and Siren first.
- Demonstrate a competent Airway to exposure assessment
- Recognition of abnormal values and the ability to interpret these values in the context of individual patients
- Relate findings to underpinning pathophysiology in order to institute appropriate management needed
- Communicate concerns regarding patient findings using an SBAR format
- Enhanced clinical performance through application of good teamwork, effective communication and leadership/followership.

- Debriefing and discussion
During the debriefing sessions staff will be expected to participate in open and critical reflection on both their own and others' response to a crisis situation. The sessions are interactive and require full participation from all who attend.
